"Why Corrugated Boxes Are Still King in 2025 – Facts You Didn’t Know!"
Corrugated Boxes: The Backbone of Modern Packaging
✅ What is a Corrugated Box?
A corrugated box is a packaging material made of a fluted corrugated sheet sandwiched between one or two flat linerboards. It is widely used for shipping, storing, and protecting products due to its strength, lightweight, and recyclability.
Different/General Name of Corrugated box:
· Carton
· Shipping Box
· Cardboard Box (commonly used, though technically not always accurate)
· Corrugated Carton
· Corrugated Fibreboard Box (CFB)
· Brown Box (due to typical kraft paper color)
· Corrugated Case
Do you know?
- “In the U.S., more than 95% of products shipped use corrugated boxes. Globally, corrugated packaging remains the predominant material for shipping due to its sustainability, strength, and cost‑effectiveness.”
✅ Components
- Liner – A liner (also called linerboard) is the flat, paper-based sheet that forms the outer layers of a corrugated board, which may be printed or plain. It provides structure and protection.
- Types of Liner - Kraft Liner, Test Liner, White Top Liner, Coated Liner
- Board Types:
- 3-ply: One flute between two liners – commonly used for lightweight packaging. (fig 1.)
- 5-ply: Two flutes and three liners – used for heavier or more fragile products. (fig 2)
- 7-ply and higher: Used for heavy-duty or export packaging.
✅ Key Properties
- GSM (Grams per Square Meter) GSM represents the weight of a sheet of paper that is 1 square meter in area, affecting thickness and durability. Unit- g/m2
- BS (Bursting Strength): Bursting strength is the absolute force (pressure) a material can withstand before rupturing, while bursting factor considers that strength relative to the material's weight (or grammage) Unit- kg/cm² or Psi
- BF (Bursting Factor): is a key indicator of a material's resistance to bursting under pressure, especially in the context of paper.
- ECT (Edge Crush Test): Indicates the stacking strength of the box – more relevant for vertical compression during transit.
- Compression Strength: Overall box strength under top load during stacking/storage. Unit – Kgf or N / KN
- Box Dimension- Both technically and commercially. They are critical for manufacturing, logistics, packaging efficiency, and compliance with customer or regulatory requirements. Measured in MM
- Moisture- Affects flexibility, bonding, and crush resistance. Measured in %Percentage (std 8-10%)
